REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The negative image of traditional markets in Indonesia should be changed, according to Djangga Lubis, the president director of market management company PD Pasar Jaya.

"Public opinion about traditional markets being muddy and emitting foul odor should be changed immediately," Lubis remarked after attending PD Pasar Jaya's working meeting on Wednesday.

But, he acknowledged that changing the public mindset about traditional markets would prove to be a major challenge.

"Everything depends on the conscious efforts of the traders to maintain cleanliness in the markets where they engage in trading," he noted.

He was of the viewpoint that it would take a long time to raise awareness about market cleanliness among the traders. Citing the example of Block A of the Fatmawati market, Lubis remarked that it took five years to transform it to a clean market.
