REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PALEMBANG -- Palembang city government, South Sumatra held a mass wedding reception at Kuto Besak Fort on the banks of Musi river. The ceremony was attended by 50 couples, including grandparents aged 75 years, Mat Cik and his wife Cik Imah.
The couple re-married after both of them have been married previously according to Islamic rule without official documents. Mat Cik and Cik Imah have been blessed with three children and 15 grandchildren.
"We are happy getting marriage finally. Our first marriage was only according to Islamic rules without official documents," Mat Cik said recently.
According to Head of Social Community in Palembang City Government Alhaidir, the mass wedding couples comprise of 11 first marriage couples and 39 second marriage couples who have been married religiously but they did not get marriage documents.
All couples look cheerful while following the ceremony. Mass marriage reception now becomes annual agenda held by Palembang city government. This program is only for low income couples. Beside the wedding party, local government also provides mass wedding gifts for visitors.
"We pray for their happiness," Alhaidir said.
