West Sulawesi holds potential mineral reserves

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MAMUJU -- The province of West Sulawesi has a potential mineral reserves in three of its regencies, an official, quoting survey, said.

The reserves are found in the regencies of Mamuju, Polewali Mandar and Mamasa not yet sufficiently exploited, Amri Eka Sakti, acting head of the regional energy and mineral resources office, said here on Tuesday.

Amri said iron ore reserves are found in the regencies of Mamuju in the sub-district of Korossa and in the regency of Polewali Mandar in the sub-districts of Tapango, Bulo, Matakali, Matanga and Anreapi.

He said West Sulawesi also has potential reserves of coal and gold that could be exploited for the welfare of the local people.

He said coal reserves are found in the sub-districts of Bonehau of the Mamuju regency and in the sub-districts of Baras and Sarudu, in the regency of Mamuju Utara

The regency of Mamuju also has precious metal or gold reserves in Batuisi, sub-district of Bonehau, and in the village of Mao in the regency of Mamuju Tengah.

Gold reserves are also found in the regency of Mamuju Utara, regency of Mamasa and regency of Polewali Mandar.

"Gold reserves in Batuisi, sub-district of Bonehau, regency of Mamuju has been exploited by the traditional gold panners," he said.
