REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia and Myanmar have agreed to enhance agricultural cooperation as a follow up to a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) they signed in 2002, according to Indonesian Agriculture Minister Suswono.
The two countries need to revise the MoU as it will lay a legal basis for the cooperation, Suswono said in a press statement released on Wednesday.
Suswono said he reached the agreement during a meeting with Myanmarese Minister of Agriculture and Irrigation U Myint Hlaing on the sidelines of the 36th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Agriculture and Forestry (AMAF) held in Nya Pyi Taw, Myanmar, on Tuesday night.
Among the areas of cooperation that the two countries can pursue to enhance the agricultural cooperation is sharing experiences and researches in the agricultural field, he said.
"We can exchange experiences and researches in the agricultural sector," he said.
Indonesia and Myanmar can discuss other areas of cooperation after a special working group of the two countries has been set up, he said.
Suswono further expressed hope that Myanmar will give positive contributions to Indonesia when it chairs AMAF in the next one year.
"We believe that under the leadership of Myanmar, AMAF will be more successful in increasing food security in ASEAN," he said.
He also invited Myanmarese businessmen to invest in the Indonesian agricultural sector. "Indonesia is very open to investment in the agricultural sector," Suswono said in a press statement released on Wednesday.
