REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MATARAM -- The National Committee for the Palestinian People (KNRP) has supported President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's wish to run for UN secretary general after his second term of office ends on October 20, 2014.

As one of the world's largest Muslim countries, Indonesia deserves to nominate Yudhoyono as UN secretary general, chairman of KNRP branch in West Nusa Tenggara Province TGH Muchlis Ibrahim stated here on Thursday.

Therefore, the entire nation must support the nomination, he said.

"We completely support Yudhoyono's step to run for UN secretary general. Now is the time for a representative from Indonesia to play a role in the UN," he noted.

He praised Yudhoyono for his success in promoting the image of the world's largest Muslim country in the eyes of the international community.

As a sovereign and independent state, Indonesia is known as a peace-loving nation. Therefore, the time is ripe for an Indonesian representative to become UN secretary general, he said.

"It is time for the UN to be led by someone who can take a firm stand and not easily influenced by permanent members who wield veto power. If that is the case, it will have no sense," he added.
