Old player in drug business nabbed in Nunukan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUNUKAN -- A drug suspect known as an old player in drug business has been nabbed in Nunukan, North Kalimantan.

The suspect found in possession of thousands of ecstasy pills has crossed the border via Nunukan to Malaysia several times without proper document before she was nabbed by anti drug police.

The 42 year old woman identified only as N alias A went to Tawau in Malaysia almost everyday without reporting to the immigration post in the port of Tunon Taka in Nunukan.

The suspect crossed the border with vessel regularly serving the Nunukan - Tawau route mixed with other travelers including Indonesian migrant workers, chief detective of the Nunukan anti drug police Adj Comr. TM Panjaitan said here on Saturday.

Panjaitan said based on investigation, the suspect received 1,910 ecstasy pills ordered from someone in Tawau only via telephone.

On Monday Aug. 25 the suspect went to Tawau to take the pills, which were put in a public telephone only around 30 meters from the port of Tawau.

After taking the pills, the suspect went to a safe place before boarding the ship heading for Nunukan. She used a small boat to drive her to the ship and boarded it via a side entrance.

Upon arrival at the International Port of Tunon Taka in Nunukan at 18.00 local time, the suspect, who had been known as an "old player" in drug business did not report to the immigration post at the port.

Panjaitan said before planning to leave the ship, which arrived at 10.00 pm local time it was possible the suspect hid in some place in the ship.

The suspect was found by anti drug police squad at 11.45 p.m in a room of the ship.

The suspect is facing a death penalty of found guilty.

Panjaitan said Nunukan has often been used by drug traffickers to smuggle drug from Malaysia to Indonesia.

"Indonesia is seen as a potential and highly profitable market by drug smugglers," he said.

Security authorities including police and the military have arrested a number of drug smugglers confiscating tend of kilograms of methamphetamine, heroine or ecstasy.
