REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) said the sea toll road plan of President elect Joko Widodo (Jokowi) could not be implemented in short term.

"Implementation has to go through a number of phases," a researcher from the Kadin Economic Research and Development Center Ina Primiana said on Wednesday.

"Implementation would need preparation in infrastructure such as ports, shipping system, and sea monitoring system," Primiana said in a discussion of the effects of Jokowi sea toll road.

She said the condition of sea infrastructure was bad and needed a lot of fixing, citing the port basins in many other countries had a depth of 16 meters as against Indonesian port basin of only 6-12 meters deep.

She said there were around 12,000 ships operating in the country and the number was not proportional with the number of existing ports. In addition, there was limited availability of alternative means of transport to industrial centers, which are mostly located in western Indonesia, she said.

Jokowi, who will be the country's next president to be installed in October, said in pre election campaign that sea toll road would help create equitable development between the western and eastern regions of the country. The idea of sea toll road means shipping lanes linking the western end and the eastern end of the country, regularly served by big ships. The sea toll road would facilitate distribution of goods from west to the east vice versa and to boost inter-island trade, he had hhh
