REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAYAPURA -- Papua's police have deployed a platoon of mobile police brigade personnel to Timika to tighten security measures in the town following the death of Dani tribal chief Korea Waker.

The Papua police personnel had been flown to Timika to strengthen the local police, Deputy Chief of the Papua provincial police Brigadier General Paulus Waterpauw said here on Wednesday.

Tribal Chief Korea Waker was found dead in SP6 river, Timika, on Monday (Aug 11).

The law and order situation in Timika and its surrounding areas had spiraled out of control following the murder.

On Wednesday, information gathered from Jayapura revealed that a community group had retaliated after Korea Waker's death, which had led to the death of five people and injured two others.

A villager was murdered and his house located at SP6 was set ablaze on Tuesday (Aug 12) at around 2:30 p.m. local time.

The names of the five deceased are Mu Said (70), Muh. Agung Kulaken (27), Noris Timang, Indra Afriadi Saputra (14), and Arfi Duran (36). The two victims who had suffered injuries are Saiful (35) and Ahmad Rumra (48).

Waterpauw expressed regret over the violence committed by the community.

"The situation cannot be allowed to go out of control. Thus, the police will take persuasive steps for providing security to all people, especially those who live in Timika," he noted.

"We will also engage with the victim's family, so that there is no retaliation," he added.
