REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KABUL -- Several Taliban gunmen seized an unfinished building near the Kabul International Airport and used rocket launchers and heavy weapons to target the military part of the airport early Thursday morning, police said.

"The fighting and rocket propelled grenade (RPG) firing on airport started after the heavily armed militants took up a four- story building in Qasaba locality in northern part of airport at around 4:30 a.m. local time," a police official told Xinhua.

The NATO fighter jets and military helicopters were hovering above the scene. Several rockets hit the compound and at the least two big explosions occurred near the seized building, he said.

"The terrorists in Qasaba are surrounded by security forces and will be killed soon, no damage to the airport, no causality," Interior Ministry spokesman Seddiq Seddiqi said in his twitter account.

Rapid Response Forces have arrived at the scene to repel a terrorist attack, he said.

A NATO operational command and Afghan Air Force headquarters are located in military wing of the airport in northern edge of the Kabul airport.

All flights were canceled and airport was closed following the attack which sent smoke above the area.
