REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, CAIRO -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, now on a visit to Egypt, discussed the ongoing Israeli attacks on Gaza with Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Al-Araby on Wednesday.

Abbas updated Al-Araby with recent developments on the ground, as well as (his) welcoming of the Egyptian cease-fire initiative, a source at the League said in a press release.

Abbas also briefed Al-Araby with Palestine's request to the United Nations demanding international protection for the Palestinian people and land from Israeli aggression, which haven't stopped since 1967.

Al-Araby said, in press remarks following the meeting, that the Palestinian people have been suffering from Israeli violations over the last five decades, so they need international protection.

On the talks with Abbas, he said they discussed the Egyptian initiative for ceasefire in Gaza and the efforts of the Palestinian leader to restore calm.

"President Abbas sent a message to UN Secretary-General calling for provision of international protection to the Palestinian people against recurrence of Israeli attacks in the future," Al-Araby revealed.

He added that the League and its member states back the Palestinian leader's quest, he added.

President Abbas is scheduled to meet with President Abdulfattah Al-Sisi tomorrow.
