REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BATAM -- The state-owned electricity company, PT PLN, has formed a non-subsidized electricity company, PT Bright PLN Batam, as the national pilot project.
PT Bright PLN Batam's Corporate Secretary, Agus Subekti, stated that PLN owns 99.99 percent of the company's shares and the rest 0.01 percent was owned by PT PLN Pension Funds.
"In the near future, non-subsidized electricity management in Indonesia will follow the scheme of Bright PLN Batam's operations," he noted.
Agus added that the operations of PT Bright PLN Batam will not utilize the government's subsidy funds budgeted for PT PLN.
"Therefore, we have to support ourselves by generating profit as we do not depend on the government's budget," he stated.
Bright PLN Batam's main income will come from selling electricity to households and will be the only company in this sector.
Other electricity plants served the industrial sector in Batam, such as in Batamindo Industry Area, Panbil Integrated Area, and Kabil Integrated Industrial Estate.
"Since we are the only company in Batam, which provides electricity to household consumers, we have to keep improving our performance to meet the needs of the growing consumers," Agus added.
Actually, there were other companies that had been established to provide non-subsidized electricity in Indonesia, but only Bright PLN Batam and PLN Tarakan in North Kalimantan have survived.
