Hatta underscores food self-sufficiency in Presidential debate

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Vice presidential candidate Hatta Rajasa underscored the importance of food self-sufficiency and food security in his speech during the presidential and vice presidential debate here on Saturday night.

"We should provide sufficient food, and the food must be affordable by all people. Then, we should diversify the foods," he said during the final round of the presidential/vice presidential debate.

The final round of the presidential debate with Prof. Sudharto P Hadi, the rector of the Diponegoro University acting as moderator, also included Prabowo Subianto, who is the presidential candidate and Hatta as running mate, and the Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Jusuf Kalla (JK) duo.

"Our effort is to improve the quality of food and nutrition, and preventing food from spoiling," he said.

Regarding energy, Hatta added that his candidacy has a commitment to increase the production of oil and gas, reduce imports, and diversify the use of renewable energy.

About the environment, there must be an emphasis on sustainable development, which is important for the Indonesian environment, Hatta noted, adding that the environment corresponds to concerns about global climate change.

"We should be very serious to improve the quality of the water, air and land. Environment is a legacy, entrusted to the generations to maintain the quality so future generations can enjoy it," Hatta added.

Indonesia will hold a presidential election on July 9, 2014, which will be contested by two pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates: Prabowo Subianto-Hatta Rajasa and Joko Widodo (Jokowi)-Jusuf Kalla (JK).

Prabowo Subianto is a retired military general and the chairman of Gerindra (Great Indonesia Movement) Party, while his running mate, Hatta Rajasa, is a former coordinating minister for economic affairs and the chairman of the National Mandate Party (PAN).

Jokowi is Jakarta`s governor and a cadre of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), while his running mate, JK, is a former vice president and a senior politician of the Golkar Party.

The Prabowo-Hatta pair is supported by Gerindra, PAN, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the United Development Party (PPP), the Crescent and Star Party (PBB), and the Golkar Party.

The Jokowi-JK pair is supported by five political parties: the Indonesia Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Nation Awakening Party (PKB), the People`s Conscience Party (Hanura), the Justice and Indonesian Unity Party (PKPI), and the National Democrat Party (Nasdem).
