President: Indonesia against aggressive defense policy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said Indonesia will not adopt an aggressive defense policy although the country would continue to modernize its defense equipment and improve the quality of the military personnel.

"We have no intention of becoming an aggressive military power, even if the integrity of the nation is not to be bargained," Yudhoyono told 453 new graduates of military academy here on Thursday.

"We only want to have a strong military force that could safeguard the country's sovereignty and contribute to peace keeping force," he said in a ceremony installing the new graduates.

He said Indonesia has taken active participation in creating and maintaining peace in a number of regions in the world.

There were 453 new graduates installed second lieutenants at the Air Force Academy Complex here including 249 from the army , 99 from the navy and 105 from the air force academies.
