REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Surabaya city government in East Java plans to raid ex-Dolly red light district, the largest prostitution complexes in Southeast Asia. Government has offered compensation fund for former commercial sex workers and pimps, which will be ended on Thursday.

"Dolly areas have been closed. This is not just a declaration, but also the implementation," Head of Public Relation of Surabaya City Government, Muhamad Fikser said recently as reported by RR Laeny Sulistyawati.

The Dolly area is home to 51 brothels, 311 pimps and 1,187 sex workers. Government through Social Services Ministry allocated eight billion IDR for 1,187 verified sex workers. Each worker will get compensation fund over five million IDR as startup capital, while pimps will receive five million IDR.

City government still focuses on distribution of compensation funds. After that, local government will join with Surabaya City Police and related agencies to monitor Dolly.

Based on our monitoring, many sex workers are still offering services in ex-Dolly areas although it is not as busy as usual. Many houses are closed with a paper announcing that his house was closed to honor fasting month of Ramadan. Several banners still stretched above the long road refusing the closure.
