REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NEW YORK -- The Security Council of the United Nations on Tuesday called for an investigation into violence against journalists in Ukraine and expressed concern about the detention and harassment of reporters.

It came after two members of a Russian television crew were killed in the ex-Soviet state's separatist east, prompting a furious reaction from Moscow, which accused Kiev of a campaign of "terror."

"The members of the Security Council encourage a thorough investigation of all incidents of violence involving journalists," it said in a statement.

"The members of the Security Council expressed concern about reported cases of detention and harassment of journalists covering the crisis in Ukraine."

Russia's ambassador to the UN Vitaly Churkin, who read the press statement, said: "Journalists are increasingly targeted by the Ukrainian armed forces.. this is another case of journalists targeted by the military."

His Ukrainian counterpart Yuriy Sergeyev said President Petro Poroshenko had ordered "a thorough investigation on the circumstances which brought these deaths."

Igor Kornelyuk, a reporter with Russia's VGTRK media group, sustained severe stomach wounds when he was hit by shrapnel after being caught in an attack by Ukrainian forces in the Russian border region.

"It is not clear if he entered Ukraine legally or not but he didn't follow the instructions to all the journalists to be accredited and to be seen that they are journalists, as well they are recommended to have self-protection equipment like casks, armored vests," said Sergeyev.

VGTRK sound technician Anton Voloshin, who was earlier thought missing, was later confirmed to have died in the same attack.
