Indonesian Police Chief: Stop mining permit

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - National Police chief Gen. Sutarman appealed government to stop issuing mining permit due to environmental damage caused by mining companies, which completely exploited the natural resources in Indonesia.

"Stop issuing mining permit. Moratorium first, as this is for our national interest," Sutarman said in a seminar of 'Coordination and Supervision Training Capacity Building for Law Enforcement Apparatus  and the Prevention of Corruption on Mineral and Coal Mining Sector' in Ternate on Monday.

The seminar is also attended by Indonesian Military Commander Gen. Moeldoko, Chairman of Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Abraham Samad, Minister of Forestry Zulkifli Hasan and Head of Presidential Work Unit for Development Monitoring and Control (UKP4) Kuntoro Mangkusubroto.

According to Sutarman, people do not benefit from mining exploitation. While raw material export fails to improve people's standard of life. 

Sutarman warned that strict law enforcement would be imposed to any apparatus illegally involved in mining sector. He added that currently only a handful people including "thugs" enjoying profit from mining sector. "Those thugs are police and military officers as well as government officials. Any police officer involving in such act must be held accountable," he said.
