REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Former Indonesian President, BJ Habibie hopes that the next Indonesian leaders should be able to act inclusively, such as to fight for Indonesian people's interests, not just for special groups. When he replaced Soeharto's position as president in 1998, Habibie also served as Chairman of Golkar's Advisory Council.

At that time, Habibie was not only responsible for Golkar, but also the entire nation of Indonesia. Habibie said that Golkar won 87 percent of votes at the House of Representative. However, he was not responsible for the 87 percent, but to all people in Indonesia. He must give benefits for all Indonesian people and create pro-people programs.

"Whoever serves in the new cabinet, I respectfully ask them to act inclusively, pro-people and fight for people's interests. They are not paid by cash but by working hours," Habibie said recently.

There were a total of 4,000 people who have received Habibie's scholarship programs during 1982-1996. Habibie asked them to develop working ability for Indonesia.

There are 1,500 best high school graduates sent to nine countries, namely United States, Japan, Britain, Netherlands, Germany, France, Australia, Austria and Canada to be technological bachelors. There are also 2,500 bachelor graduates, who are given scholarships to pursue master and doctoral education.

The alumni currently have became national figures, such as  legislators from different parties, echelon officials in several ministries, as well as researchers in state institutions. Mutia Ramadhani/Antara
