India's Apollo Hospital launches telemedicine center in Medan

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MEDAN -- As a first of its kind, the Apollo Hospitals from India in association with “PT Medik Assist4 you”, launched the Apollo Telemedicine Centre and Apollo Information Center at Medan on 14th May, 2014. It was formally inguarated by H.E. Basir Ahmed, Consul General of India, in the presence of other dignitaries.

It is the first Telemedicine Center of Apollo Hospitals in Indonesia.  It shall go a long way in supplementing the efforts of the Government of Indonesia in bringing the medical facility to the remote parts of Indonesia.

The joint initiative of the Indian and the Indonesian companies will bring the “State of the art” medical facilities available in India for the benefit of the people of Sumatra.  Branded as “e-Health” initiative, the Telemedicine Center shall bring quality healthcare and expert consultation within the reach of common population residing in medically inaccessible rural areas of Sumatra Island.

The Centre would also allow the patients to seek medical care in case of emergency or other conditions. The patients and doctors shall be able to share medical reports, examine patients through video or radiology images. 

The telemedicine centre will provide an all-round investigation and an accurate diagnosis. Telemedicine Centre shall be very effective, especially in handling post surgery, post operation complications.

The hallmark of this centre is that it ensures minimal patient displacement and provides quality treatment. It enables decrease in the relocation of medical specialists to the patient, cost effectiveness, efficient and effective use of medical and technological resources. It will open tremendous possibilities for continuing education and training for isolated rural health practitioners.

The Telemedicine Centre in Medan is a part of the Apollo Telemedicine Networking Foundation (ATNF), a not-for-profit organization, of the Apollo Hospitals Group.

India's healthcare system is developing rapidly and continues to expand its coverage, services and expenditure in the public as well as private sectors thereby creating a large market for hospital information systems and other healthcare-related IT solutions. Indian domestic health care sector is poised to touch US$ 100 billion by 2015 and US$ 275.6 billion by 2020, according to industry estimates.

The country has also become one of the leading destinations for high-end diagnostic services with tremendous capital investment for advanced diagnostic facilities, thus catering to a greater proportion of population. Medical tourism is booming in India. Medical tourists choose India as their favorable destination because of the key opportunities in Indian healthcare sector in the form of efficient infrastructure and technology.

Majority of these tourists came to Indian shores seeking liver transplant, heart surgeries like bypass or pacemaker, bone marrow transplant, hip replacement, knee replacement, eye surgeries, etc. Indian expertise in conducting these surgeries with most advanced technology is at par with its American or European counterparts. Medical tourists visiting India are anticipated to touch 3,200,000 by 2015 and medical tourism is expected to grow at an annual rate of 30 per cent till 2015.
