East Java post 6.4 percent growth in economy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- East Java recorded a fairly strong growth of 6.4 percent in economy in the first quarter of this year exceeding the country's economic growth of 5.21 percent.

Head of the statistic section of the provincial office of the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) Setyowati said East Java led over other provinces in Java in economic growth.

Jakarta grew only 5.99 percent, West Java 5.49 percent and Central Java 5.37 percent and Banten 5.2 percent, Setyowati said here on Monday.

She said an increase was recorded in all economic sectors in East Java with the highest growth of 9.54 percent recorded by the construction sector, followed by the transport and communication sector which grew by 9.5 percent.

She said the East Java regional Gross Domestic Product based on current price was Rp305.23 trillion in the first quarter of this year, up from Rp267.082 trillion a year earlier.

Based on the 2000 constant price, the regional GDP was Rp108.09 trillion or up from Rp106.024 trillion a year earlier.
