Govt to turn Dolly's red-light district into a family friendly zone

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA - Governor of East Java, Soekarwo plans to build Surabaya's largest red-light district known as Dolly and turn it into a family friendly zone equipped with public facilities including places of worship. The East Java's prostitution site will be closed on June 19, 2014.

Soekarwo is determined to close the largest red-light district in Southeast Asian region, as part of efforts to help curb the rapid spread of HIV/AIDS. He is in coordination with Surabaya's municipal government to proceed with the plan. 

The provincial government pledges to facilitate Surabaya government with training fund and housing allowance for former commercial sex workers. While Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini has prepared some plans after the closing. People are still allowed to stay in Dolly but any prostitution activity is outlawed.

"We will create new jobs for them," Rismaharini stated.
