Investment in transmigration areas reaches 13 trillion IDR

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration recorded that there were 41 companies investing in transmigration areas in 11 provinces throughout Indonesia with value of 13 trillion IDR. The areas are located in Aceh, North Sumatra, South Sumatra, Riau Islands, Riau, East Kalimantan, South Kalimantan, Central Kalimantan, West Nusa Tenggara, Gorontalo and Central Sulawesi.

"Transmigration areas have special attraction for investors, especially for plantation and agricultural areas because the natural resources are not widely used. It also helps government to accelerate economic growth in various regions," Ministry of Manpower and Transmigration, Muhaimin Iskandar said in Jakarta recently.

The 41 companies consisted of palm oil companies, sisal and sugar cane. They cooperated with community in developing areas through nucleus-plasma schemes with special permits. Iskandar said that government continued to encourage investment in transmigration areas to accelerate regional development growth and improve people's welfare, also to absorb employment opportunities for surrounding communities.

"Investor's capital should be adjusted and combined with land capacity and labor facilities in transmigration areas. It brings a synergy to accelerate transmigration areas development," Iskandar added.

There are 57 other companies currently in process to obtain permits. They are plantation companies, animal husbandry, agriculture, entrepreneurship and forestry sector in community plantation forests (HTR) . Investors are interested to develop local leading commodities, such as palm oil, rice, rubber, sugar cane, sisa and seaweed.
