REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- A number of university students who are members of People's Justic Front (FKR) held a protest to commemorate Earth Day, which was held at Lapangan Pahlawan and office of Sumbawa regent in West Nusa Tenggara on Tuesday accompanied by distribution of seeds trees.

They asked people to protect and maintain the environment for safety of the earth.

FKR coordinator, Cempe Sastrawan said that the earth and its contents were used as much as possible for the prosperity of people, but the opposite happened, people's misery. History of deforestation in the country happened since 1967 began through ratification of foreign investment law conducted by the New Order government.

"This concept made 2.7 million hectares of forests damaged per year. Logging activities in everywhere without any compensation to the forest itself," Sastrawan said recently.

FKR delivered several demands to local government. They reject the establishment of PT Newmont in Dodo Rinti area. They also reject all mining activities, such as stones, manganese, gold, uranium, green stones and others, as well as building national industrialization under people's control.
