Jokowi meets Muslim clerics in Cianjur, West Java

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP)'s presidential candidate Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, has met with Muslim clerics in Cianjur, West Java, a cadre of the party said.

"In his campaign, Jokowi met with Ulmas (Muslim clerics) in Cianjur on Saturday," Fahmi Habsy, a young PDIP cadre said here on Monday.

In Cianjur, Jokowi also visited Umi Gelar, the wife of the late Mama Gelar who is founder of Umi Hj. Zaitun Fatimah 'Umi Gelar' Islamic Boarding School. When she was visited by Jokowi, Umi Gelar, who was now 85 years old, was ill.

According to Fahmi, during the meeting, Umi Gelar prayed for Jokowi so that he could carry out the message of Sunan Gunung Jati (one of the nine Wali or Muslim propagators who introduced Islam in Java) for the country's would be leaders.

She prayed for Jokowi hoping that if he is elected president he would remain to be devoted to Allah and always think of the people at the grass-root level as well as the Indonesian people as a whole.

Umi also hoped that Jokowi would always remember the message of Gunung Jati.

Jokowi made the visit in connection with PDIP campaigns.

Currently, there are 15 political parties in Indonesia which are conducting campaigns for the upcoming April 9 legislative elctions.

Three of them are local parties in Aceh, including the Aceh Party (Partai Aceh-PA), the Aceh People`s Party (Partai Rakyat Aceh-PRA) and the Aceh Sovereignty Party (Partai Daulat Aceh-PDA).

The remaining 12 parties are the National Democratic Party (Nasdem), the Nation`s Awakening Party (PKB), the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), the Indonesian Democratic Party Struggle (PDIP), the Golkar Party (Golkar) and the Great Indonesia Movement (Gerindra).

Also included in the line-up are the Democratic Party (Demokrat), the National Mandate Party (PAN), the United Development Party (PPP), the People`s Conscience Party (Hanura), the Crescent and Star Party (PBB) and the Indonesian Justice and Unity Party (PKPI).
