REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, PADANG PARIAMAN -- Thickening haze reduced pilot's visibility at Minangkabau International Airport and disrupted flights of Garuda Indonesia and three other airlines on Wednesday, the airport authority said.

"Garuda cancelled five Padang-Jakarta flights while Lion Air, Sriwijaya Air and Citilink just delayed their flights on Wednesday but I have yet to receive today's condition," the airport's operational manager Joko Sudarmanto said here Thursday.

The pilot's visibility on Wednesday was just about 800 meters due to the thick haze. Garuda and the other airlines cancelled or delayed their flights for safety reason, he said.

Despite the government's efforts to put out forest fires in Sumatra, the number of hotspots increased significantly to 2,393 on Wednesday morning from 288 on Monday afternoon, Head of Riau city's Meteorological, Climatology and Geophysics Agency Sugarin noted.
