REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Jakarta's Governor Joko Widodo, better known as Jokowi, has said he wants the imported Transjakarta buses to be assembled in Indonesia.
"We will continue our plans to import the Transjakarta buses, but if it is possible we want the buses to be assembled in Indonesia," the Jakarta governor stated at the City Hall here on Thursday.
He explained that the assembling of the imported cars will be carried out at home to avoid the repetition of the previous Transjakarta bus imports, which were found damaged with corrosion in their machines.
"If we assemble them ourselves we check them directly to see their conditions, including whether they still can function well," he said.
The governor said even though Jakarta once faced a problem when importing the Transjakarta buses, the Jakarta government will continue its plan to buy the Transjakarta buses because the budget for the project had been included in the 2014 Regional Budget Plan.
"Though we have a problem, we will continue with the purchase plan because it has been included in the regional budget for 2014 and has been approved by the Jakarta councilors," he said.
Until now, the Jakarta governor claimed that he had not yet known the total losses suffered from the damaged and corroded buses bought for the Transjakarta Busway fleet.
"Let's wait for the result of BPKP's audit," the governor noted.
The problem is still being probed by the government's finance comptroller BPKP.
A total of five units of the Transjakarta articulated buses and 10 units of others for the Busway Integrated City Bus Service (BKTB) were found with corrosion.
It was suspected that the causes of the corrosion were the use of second-hand or reconditioned spare parts.
