REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- State Enterprises Minister Dahlan Iskan has asked one of the directors of state-owned electricity company PT PLN to stay in Medan, North Sumatra, to deal with electricity service problem there.

"One of the PLN directors must stay in Medan. Not all directors must stay in Jakarta," he said to Antara here on Sunday.

He said because all directors stayed in Jakarta they could not see what people in the region had been through in the past ten days.

He said the problem of electricity shortage in the region had become serious as people around Kualanamu suddenly demanded stoppage of the operation of PLN's 30-MW plant in the region.

"In connection with that I have asked PLN board of directors to settle the problem with the people while awaiting maintenance service on the Belawan plant to finish expected in the next two weeks' time," he said.

People in Medan, the capital of North Sumatra, its surrounding areas, have been restless after their activities have been disrupted by increasing outages reaching six to seven times a day.

Dahlan Iskan has earlier asked for an emergency action to be taken because electricity supply problem may not be tolerated in a big city like Medan.
