REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BOGOR -- There were criminal motives behind the shooting incidents reported in a number of areas in Papua so far, stated Papua Governor Lukas Enembe.
"I think what has happened is a criminal activity. A group of people wielding firearms conduct shootings, and thereafter, make demands in order to meet their needs. They do not fight for independence. And so, I consider them a criminal group, he noted at the Istana Bogor Presidential Palace, here on Tuesday.
In view of that, he had urged the Chief of Papua Regional Police to carry out law enforcement operations.
Coordinating Minister for Political, Security and Legal Affairs Djoko Suyanto added that no operations have been conducted by the military in Papua or West Papua, so far.
He explained that the government has, until now, only carried out law enforcement operations against the perpetrators of crimes.
"There are no military operations. What has so far been carried out, are law enforcement operations," he claimed.
He further added that the government has requested all parties, including the central government, regional governments, and community groups to invite the people still holding arms in Papua, to give up their arms, stop conducting violence, and return to normal life.
