Surabaya city government gets full rights over Surabaya zoo

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Surabaya city government finally gets full rights over Surabaya zoo from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. The permit will be given to Mayor of Surabaya, Tri Rismaharini this week.

The decision was made after a meeting attended by Forestry Minister Zulkifli Hasan, Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Hatta Rajasa, Environment Minister Balthasar Kambuaya and East Java Governor Soekarwo.

"Mayor of Surabaya will soon have full authority. We will give the license though there is still an appeal in court," Zulkifli Hasan said recently.

There will be management refreshment aimed to solve conflicts, so that Surabaya zoo will focus on animal welfare, such as cage and feed management audited by Airlangga University. If there is a sick animal, so it will be transferred and treated by conservation organization that has a license.

"Now we have full authority to deal both in human resources and investment management," Maharini said recently.

Next, Surabaya city government will work on provision of clean water, cages, cage expansion adapted to the natural habitat. Local government needs fund of 50 billion IDR.
