72 children join football selection for Brazil

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Some 72 street children from several cities in East Java participated in a selection to form the "Garuda Baru" program here on Saturday, as part of the Street Children World Cup (SCWC) 2014 in Brazil.

The selection, held by the Transmuda Energy Nusantara (TEN) foundation, was a continuation of similar events which were held in Medan and Makassar on January 11, chairman of TEN foundation Mahir Bayasut said here on Saturday.

The selection process for the "Garuda Baru" program was conducted in seven cities, including Medan, Makassar, Surabaya, Palembang, Yogyakarta, Bandung and Jakarta.

"After local selections in seven cities, the national selection and subsequent practices will be held in Jakarta from February 16 through March 23 to form a team," Mahir stated.

Regarding the local selection in Surabaya, TEN foundation cooperated with the Sanggar Alang-Alang and Football School in Surabaya, Mahir noted.

In addition, the TEN Foundation also collaborates with Brazilian Soccer Schools, Pertamina Soccer School and Jakarta Football Academy to act as a jury at local and national selection.
