Vietnamese PM stresses democracy improvements in New Year's message

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, HANOI -- Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung attached great importance to democracy, ownership of the people and institutional improvements in his New Year's message issued in Vietnam's capital Hanoi Wednesday.

Under the theme of improving institutions, promoting ownership of the people, successfully implementing tasks in 2014 and creating foundation for fast and sustainable development, the Vietnamese prime minister's New Year message stated that quality of institutions has decisive impacts on business environment, competitiveness of the whole economy as well as of each company.

The country can enjoy high competitiveness only when a high- quality institution and modern governance are ensured, said the prime minister.

Vietnamese Vnexpress online newspaper quoted Dung as emphasizing the importance of opening democracy, applying market mechanism in economic activities in Vietnam in the past 30 years.

Dung highlighted in the message that democracy is a big idea emphasized by late President Ho Chi Minh, adding that once applied, the amended constitution that was approved by Vietnamese National Assembly in 2013 will open a new constitutional era to implement President Ho Chi Minh's idea.

The deeper and the more practical direct democracy is, the more effectiveness representative democracy will be, said the prime minister.
