REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Members of the House of Representatives have insisted that Vice President Boediono should attend a meeting with the parliamentary monitoring team to explain the government's decision to bailout Bank Century in 2009.

"We will send an invitation to the vice president soon. The next meeting will be held on December 18," a member of the team monitoring the Bank Century case in parliament Bambang Susatyo said here on Tuesday.

Bambang expressed hope that Vice President Boediono would attend the scheduled meeting with parliament members. "If the vice president does not attend, people will become more suspicious," he added.

Earlier, Vice President Boediono had stated that he would not attend the meeting with parliament members because it would hamper the ongoing investigation by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK).

Through his spokesman, Yopie Hidayat, the vice president noted that the monitoring team for the Bank Century case in parliament was set up to monitor the legal process of the case, not conduct investigations itself.

The government's bailout of Bank Century has become a controversial issue, especially after the funds provided increased rapidly from the initial amount set by the central bank, Bank Indonesia.

Bank Century received a bailout of Rp6.7 trillion during the financial crisis of 2008, despite failing to fulfil the requirements for a bailout.

According to the State Audit Board, Bank Indonesia modified its own regulations to provide the loan. Boediono was central bank governor at the time.
