REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDUNG - Chairman of Regional Representatives Council (DPD), Irman Gusman agreed to propose a moratorium on new autonomous regions in Indonesia. He said that the proposal should be comply with the law.
"Some parties suspect the existence of a new autonomous region ridden by political interests," Gusman said recently.
He said that new autonomous region in Indonesia originally aimed to improve residents' welfare in remote areas. Now, it is often used as a tool for political purposes by some parties.
Gusman hopes that government, House of Representatives and Regional Representatives Council will find a formula to tighten provisions in formation of a new autonomous region. Legislation does not provide space for a moratorium, although government declares a moratorium on new autonomous region.
"So we have to restrict its mechanism. It is not easy to give a regional autonomy without a readiness," Gusman said.
He estimated that 85 percent of new autonomous regions in Indonesia did not work. When the administration system is still inadequate, local autonomy cannot occur successfully.
