REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, KUTA -- The House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Marzuki Alie has promised to ensure security at the World Trade Organization (WTO) conference at Nusa Dua in Bali, which will be held from Dec. 3 to 6.

"I promise to secure the WTO conference and fight for the aspirations of the people to create prosperity," the House Speaker said, while inaugurating the Parliamentary Conference on the World Trade Organization (PCWTO) on Monday.

People's aspirations in the present day scenario are related to the dynamics of and challenges posed by various cooperation frameworks and free trade agreements struck at the bilateral, regional, and multilateral levels, Marzuki pointed out.

"Will free trade be able to create prosperity and remove poverty, accommodate the aspirations and interests of developing and developed countries, distribute assets effectively and adequately among the marginal groups which are not part of mainstream development at the local, national, and international levels?" he asked.

Marzuki also questioned if free trade could be used in harmony with the spirit of nationalism and the spirit of sustainable development related to various issues and events taking place in other parts of the world.

Meanwhile, Denpasar city police spokesman Adjunct Senior Commissioner Gusti Kade Budhi Harryarsana stated that a total of 200 policemen had been deployed on Monday for extra security at the United States Consulate in Denpasar, after it was learnt that a rally against the WTO conference will be staged there.

"We have deployed 200 joint police personnel to secure the United States Consulate here," Harryarsana said on Monday.

He added that the security around the Consulate had been stepped up in anticipation of any possible security disturbances during the anti-WTO conference rally.

"We do not want the rally to end in chaos. Therefore, we want to ensure security by deploying hundreds of police personnel at the United States Consulate on Hayam Wuruk Street," Gusti stated.

According to him, hundreds of protestors from a number of public organizations in Denpasar planned on staging a rally against the WTO conference in Nusa Dua.
