A policewoman who want to appear before Chief of Police, wearing her headscarf

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, The non availability of headscarf (Jilbab) uniform rule for policewomen in Indonesia's National Police (INP) was not a problem Andriyani, a female police officer to feel inferior to others. Wearing the headscarf, Commissioner Desy Andriyani remained confident on serving as police staff who deal with foreign affairs.

The mother of two kids decided to wear headscarf since the Polwan (Policewomen) day in early September 2010. She felt it's the right moment to confirm her firm intention to wear headscarf.

"I began with bismillah," Andriyani said to Republika recently.

The one who inspired her to wear headscarf was her daughter. She wanted her daughter to wear Muslimah dress.

"How can I teach her to cover aurat (ornament/private body parts according to divinely definition), while I still indulgence on my aurat," she said.

The Head of Translators in International Relations Division of INP, Senior Commissioner Desy Andriyani, admitted that there was nothing extraordinary on her appearance. While serving at ASEAN Police ASEAN or ASEANAPOL, she ever considered as the Indonesian workers (TKI) due to her headscarf.

Graduated from Senior Leadership School of Police (SESPIM) in 2008, she was examined by immigration and customs officers at the airport. 

"For me it's normal," she said to Republika.

Headscarf was not a barrier for her, it even supported her career. She believed it could be a protector for her.

Every time she attended a meeting, Adriyani always feel being avoided of doing anything contrary to the principles of her faith.

"There is no cheek kissing with non-mahram (unlawful), no wine and alcoholic beverages drinking," she said shaking her head firmly.

Desy, on one time, asked to taste wine. Then she immediately rejected the offer. "That is not my tradition," she said. Although it's rejected, Andriyani still revered as a guest. Desy then enjoyed the provided nonalcoholic beverages.

According to her, such a style did not mean without respect for others. The attitude, according to Desy, was a firmness of one's conviction which was embedded in the heart. Islam tough not to consume intoxicants as it was unlawful.

"I hold that principle," she said. The conviction was more firmly ingrained since her wearing of headscarf.

The recipient of the honor of SL Allegiance for 16th year said wearing headscarf was an option that she said should be valued and respected.

The participant of SESPIM Dikreg, the 46th graduate, had has a single goal. She wanted to wear a police uniform with headscarf when appearing before Chief of INP.

"I dream of it," she said.
