REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, LONDON -- The Indonesian consulate general in Dubai has received an award from the Director General of Dubai Residency and Foreigners Affairs, Maj. Gen. Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri.
The award was given in recognition of the consulate general's success in handling the problems faced by Indonesian domestic workers in the United Arab Emirates, a spokesman for the Indonesian consulate general, Adiguna Wijaya, said on Monday.
Similar awards were also handed to the representatives of the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Palestine in Dubai.
In his address, Maj. Gen. Marri congratulated the Indonesian consulate general and representatives of the four countries for their close cooperation with local authorities in handling the problems of domestic workers.
He said the Dubai immigration office is always open for cooperation with other parties to resolve the problems of domestic workers.
The main problems facing domestic workers lie in the process of recruitment and training in their country of origin, he noted.
Immigrant workers employed in the informal sector in the United Arab Emirates must learn more about the laws and culture of the Middle Eastern country, he added.
A lack of knowledge about the work environment in Dubai, in particular, and the United Arab Emirates in general, ranked among the main causes of problems faced by domestic workers, he said.
