REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, DEPOK -- President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has asked members of the elite police Mobile Brigade (Brimob) unit to continue to improve their abilities and master technology in order to upgrade the performance of their duties.

"As an elite police unit, the Brimob corps must sharpen their capabilities to handle crimes of high intensity, riots, terrorism and armed crimes," the president said at the Brimob headquarters in Kelapa Dua, Depok, West Java, on Friday.

While fast growing developments require a high level of skill, Brimob members must inevitably improve their abilities in all fields, he said.

"They must also be able to conduct search and rescue efforts. At the international level, the Brimob corps should also join the UN police peacekeeping unit in Darfur, Sudan," he said.

Brimob played a central role in the nation's history, particularly when they fought in the November 10, 1945 battle against Dutch colonial rulers in Surabaya, East Java. Over the years, Brimob has remained a special unit of the Indonesian police, which has formidable tasks and challenges, President Yudhoyono said.

"In the era of reform and consolidation, the tasks and responsibilities of Brimob corps are not easy. Not only must they function as protectors of the public, but also must stay at the forefront of the battle to deal with domestic threats and disturbances," he noted.
