Jokowi to allow a quadriplegic athlete to climb National Monument

JAKARTA -- Governor of Jakarta, Joko Widodo (popularly known as Jokowi) met with a quadriplegic athlete, Sabar Gorky who asked the Governor to let him climb National Monument (Monas). Gorky plans to do the show on December 8, 2013.

He only has one leg. The man wants to commemorate Quadriplegic Day on December 3, Anti-Corruption Day on December 9 and Rights Day on December 10, 2013.

"Monas is an icon of Jakarta, which is also a national icon. In case anyone wants to climb it, why not? Of course, I let him go," Jokowi said on Friday.

Gorky who comes from Solo, Central Java plans to climb the Monument by using rope access system or climbing with two ropes are fitted with seat belts tied at waist and chest protector. 

For your information, Gorky ever climbed Mount Elbrus, the highest mountain in Europe, also Mount Kilimanjaro in Africa in 2011. He also recorded his accomplishments as a world champion in four international competitions of rock climbing in France.

"I want to invite Jakarta Governor to climb the monument with me," Gorky said.
