REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR) could play a role in resolving the Iranian nuclear crisis, House Speaker Marzuki Alie has said.
"Indonesia, through the DPR, could play a role in re-starting stalled Iranian nuclear talks. We could benefit from our good relations with Iran in the interests of the Indonesian nation," he was quoted as saying by the DPR's official website on Wednesday.
The Iranian nuclear crisis is still ongoing as talks with western countries failed to reach an agreement, he added.
According to Marzuki, Iran has the right to enrich uranium.
In a show of support, Marzuki will visit Iran on November 19 at the invitation of the Iranian government.
According to him, the Iranian ambassador to Indonesia had frequently met members from the DPR to ask for help with Iran's nuclear program.
"I have received invitations several times. The Iranian ambassador has also visited the DPR several times. I think there is nothing wrong in accepting an invitation in view of the relations between Indonesia and Iran," he added.
Marzuki noted that newly-elected Iranian President Hassan Rowhani is more moderate than his predecessors.
"The new Iranian president is more transparent and moderate," he said.
The Iranian president has also opened communication lines with western countries, including the United States, he noted.
"However, Rowhani will stick to his principles and maintain the sovereignty of his country against any threat of sanction by western countries," he added.
