REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- Indonesia's minister of energy and mineral resources Jero Wacik has urged US companies to abide by Indonesian regulations.

"I told them they should follow the regulations used in Indonesia," he said at his office here on Monday after meeting with dozens of US oil, gas and mining business leaders belonging to the US-ASEAN Business Council.

Jero assured them that the regulations would not harm their business interests.

"They must not only see their own interests, but also those of the Indonesian people," he said.

He noted that Indonesia is just developing its democracy.

Jero said the government sometimes consults with the parliament regarding regulations, such as Law Number 4 of 2009 that regulates mineral processing in the country.

"The law may not be violated. But we are still negotiating the regulations with the DPR (parliament) as the deadline is near," he said.

Jero, however, promised he would try to simplify rules which are still too complicated.

"We will also lose if their implementation takes too long," he said.

During their meeting, Jero asked the US companies to continue to invest in Indonesia.

"Although elections will soon happen, do not wait and see. Just invest, because whoever the next president will be, he will need investment in the fields of electricity, oil and gas," he said.
