REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, NUSA DUA -- Foreign Affairs Minister Marty Natalegawa said Indonesia's Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) has contributed to the growth of democratic leadership in a number of countries.
"I believe the IPD has contributed to the growth of skilled democratic leadership in several countries, as the institution has provided lessons in democracy to a number of young political leaders," said Marty, speaking at the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) here on Thursday.
According to Minister, the IPD has worked closely with the government and civil society in several developing countries, including Myanmar, Egypt and Tunisia.
The IPD has also conducted programs with Myanmar by sharing experiences and best practices on developing a democratic agenda.
"In this context, there are sixty friends from Myanmar who have been taking part in the Indonesia-Myanmar workshop on leadership and political party reforms, organized by the IPD," Marty said.
The Minister added that the IPD also continues holding democracy workshops for Egypt and Tunisia.
The IPD, Marty said, invited young political party leaders from more than 15 countries to discuss, learn and share their views on democratic issues.
"In this regards, Indonesia wishes their best to those countries and organizations that have extended support and assistance to the IPD in carrying out its democracy activities," Marty said.
The IPD was created to carry out the goals arising from the Bali Democracy Forum (BDF) which discusses and shares issues about democracy.
The institute was established in 2008 in Udayana University of Bali and in cooperation with universities and other institutions within and beyond the Asia Pacific region.
Indonesia hosted the BDF VI on Nov. 7 and 8, 2013, which is attended by delegations from 81 countries, as well as three international organizations.
A number of heads of state also attend the forum, including Sultan of Brunei Darussalam Hassanal Bolkiah, Prime Minister of Timor Leste Xanana Gusmao, and Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The Ministry has chosen the theme "Consolidating Democracy in a Pluralistic Society" to support developing democracies throughout the world.
