Brunei to host 6th ASEAN forum on migrant labor

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei Darussalam will host the 6th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Forum on Migrant Labor on Nov. 26-27, aiming at reviewing, discussing and exchanging the best practices and ideas between governments, workers' and employers' organizations, and civil society stakeholders on key issues facing migrant workers in the region.

According to the official Radio Televisyen Brunei website on Wednesday, the forum will also develop recommendations to advance the implementation of principles of the ASEAN Declaration on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.

At the Preparatory Consultation Meeting for the forthcoming forum Tuesday, Datin Paduka Hajah Intan binti Haji Mohammad Kassim, president of the Community Well-being Council, said the participants will have the added advantage of the invaluable experience of developing the draft ASEAN Instrument on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights of Migrant Workers.

The consultation meeting held by the Brunei Civil Society Organization was attended by various stakeholders from related non- government organizations as well as government agencies.

Among the objectives of the meeting is to take stock and share information on the progress of the implementation of previous forum recommendations at the national level, discuss the forum's proposed theme and prepare recommendations.
