Police arrest eight over fatal shootings of policemen

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The Indonesian police have arrested eight terror suspects in connection with the fatal shootings of several police officers, Police Chief Commissioner General Sutarman said here on Thursday.

"We have detained eight people. Previously, we had arrested six and have arrested two more this morning," the new police chief stated.

The eight detainees were not the masterminds of the fatal shootings, but they had contributed to the crimes by providing funding, weapons, vehicles, and so on.

The suspects were apprehended in Bima, West Nusa Tenggara, and in South Sulawesi.

Over the past two months, four police officers have been shot dead and another was injured after being shot at by unknown gunmen.

On July 27, police officer Adjunct Inspector II Patah Saktiyono of the Gambir police sector was shot by an unknown gunman in Pamulang, South Tangerang, Banten, but he survived.

On Aug. 7, policeman Adjunct Inspector I Dwiyatno was shot dead at Ciputat, South Tangerang, Banten. A week later, Adjunct Inspector I Kushendratna and Brigadier Chief Ahmad Maulana were killed by unknown gunmen in Pondok Aren, South Tangerang, Banten.

On Sept. 10, Adjunct Inspector II Sukardi was shot dead in front of the Corruption Eradication Commission office in South Jakarta.
