REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, SURABAYA -- Indonesian young tycoon, Erick Thohir recognized the talent of Indonesian soccer players. The largest shareholder of Inter Milan FC is ready to pave a way for those who are able to compete in international tournaments.
"But it depends on the players, are they ready to compete?" Thohir told Republika after delivering his success story presentation to participants of Investor Summit and Capital Market Expo (ISCM) in Grand City, Surabaya, Thursday (31/10).
He said, he still will see the ability of the young players. In the near future, he will hold a meeting with Persib Bandung FC and Arema Malang FC. According to him, the meeting aims for searching possibilities of exploring local player by his United States DC United FC.
However, he's not sure if there are local player ready to compete at Inter Milan. Even, for the national U-19 team which is currently being in its victorious era, Erick said, it was too late for them to start a career in Europe. However, these opportunities remain open at DC United.
"If you want to go to Europe, you must begin at least on U-16 level," he said.
Asking about the U-19 player he wants to pick up, Erick reluctant to mention names. He just says their talents were quite good.
On the other hands, there are several points, he said, that should be considered to improve Indonesia's readiness to produce international players, such as; the readiness of football industries and the willingness of government to fix stadium infrastructures in some areas.
"Local governments and district clubs level must work together to improve the quality of football," he said.
He added that Inter Milan is currently looking for a left and right winger. Although the owner of Mahaka Media has authority on the Italian giants, he sees currently none of Indonesia's player ready to fill the void on the two lines.
