REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA -- The government has worked hard to improve the quality of life and the overall development of children in Indonesia, according to Women's Empowerment and Child Protection Minister Linda Amalia Sari Gumelar.

"The government has made every effort to fulfill the rights of children and to protect them from various acts of violence," the minister said here on Wednesday.

But she added that many harmful events still happen to children in the field.

"In reality, we cannot deny that harm comes to children and indicates that the government still has problems in improving the welfare of the children," she noted.

She noted that various acts of violence, malnutrition, negligence, and exploitation against children continue to occur.

"Therefore, cooperation from all parties at central and regional government levels is needed as a solution to the problems being faced by children," Linda said.

According to her, the number of children in Indonesia has reached 84 million, or 34 percent of the total population.
