REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, MANADO -- The sale price of North Sulawesi's clove in Japanese market reached 242 thousand IDR per kilogram. The price can be developed to increase farmer's income.

"The high sale price is written in document of certificates of origin (SKA) which reached 22 USD per kilogram," Head Department of Industry and Trade in North Sulawesi, Olvia Ateng said recently.

Ateng hopes the price can rise in future as it is an opportunity for North Sulawesi's clove farmers to get higher income. Local government also must hard work, because trade volume to Japan is still small.

Volume of clove export to Japan reached only 750 kilograms worth 16,500 USD. It is not yet a benchmark of maximum price.

Head of Foreign Trade Division in Department of Industry of North Sulawesi, Feby Karambut said that the highest demand for North Sulawesi's clove came from domestic factories, but the export market was still wide opened. The high prices will impact on improving farmer's welfare.

North Sulawesi is one of biggest clove producers in Indonesia, about 15 thousand tonnes per year. Main producer areas area in North Sulawesi are located in Minahasa, South Minahasa, Southeast Minahasa, Bolaang Mongondow, Sangihe, Talaud and Sitaro.
