Yogyakarta forms Concerned Citizens group for HIV/AIDS

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, YOGYAKARTA -- Cases of HIV/AIDS in Yogyakarta increase every year. Based on data from National AIDS Commission (KPA) of Yogyakarta, its number reached 618 cases until June 2013, consisted of 412 cases of HIV and 206 cases of AIDS. 

"The figure increases 15 percent every year," Secretary of KPA Yogyakarta, Kaswanto said on Thursday. 

About 66 percent of HIV/AIDS patients in Yogyakarta are male and 41 percent of them are 20-29 year old. It means, most of them are young.

In 2012, cases of HIV/AIDS in Yogyakarta reached 566 cases, consisted of 377 cases of HIV and 189 cases of AIDS. Most of cases are caused sexual behaviours and 20 percent others caused by the use of syringe. 

To reduce HIV/AIDS cases in Yogyakarta, local government forms Concerned Citizens association for HIV/AIDS. This organization is existed in villages that have many patients of HIV/AIDS, such as Karangwaru village, Giwangan, Prawirodirjan, Ngampilan, Demangan, Sosromenduran, Gowongan, Suryatmajan, Prenggan, Gunungketur, Brontokusuman, Gedongkiwo, Pakuncen and Penembahan village. 

This organization involves some elements in community. Establishment of this institution is expected to strengthen communities to overcome HIV/AIDS in their villages.
