REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Indonesia is reselected as a member of Board of International Maritime Organization (IMO) for 2013-2015. Secretary General in Ministry of Transportation, Leon Muhammad said Indonesia sat on the second place with 128 total votes in 2011, below Singapore with 131 votes.
"With support from various countries, it will strengthen cooperation for development of maritime transport in the world, particularly in safety navigation and protection of maritime environment," Muhammad said recently.
Since joining IMO in 1961, Indonesia has strong commitment to actively contribution in world maritime development, .either through IMO or other international and regional organizations.
Several initiatives have been undertaken by Indonesia as a member of IMO in current period, such as filed a proposal of Marine Electronic Highway in Malacca strait and Singapore strait. Indonesia also has managed to make standard of Indonesian flag nonconvention vessels for securing safety of sea voyage in 2009. It was combined with domestic ferry safety project.
