Debit card transactions 'outnumber' credit card's

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - The growth of debit card transaction surpassed credit card. Based on data from Bank Indonesia (BI), volume of debit card reached 315.7 million transactions in July 2013 or grew 25.63 percent, while volume of credit card grew only 12.9 percent to 22.1 million transactions in same period.

Interbank transfer transactions contributed most to growth of debit card transactions about 77 percent to 22 million transactions. Meanwhile, transfer intrabank only grew 23.9 percent to 58.2 million transactions. Shopping transaction volume also increased significantly about 37 percent, from 16.5 million transactions in July 2012 to 22.7 million transactions in July 2013. . 

State owned banking company, PT Bank Rakyat Indonesia Tbk admitted unlike debit card, credit card holders are more limited. 

Head of Credit Card Division in BRI, Mohamad Helmi said distribution of BRI's debit card, credit card, prepaid or private label, as well as Brizzi card are known as the largest in Indonesia with more than 18 million cards.

"We want our card has many functions. Not only for ATM withdrawals but also for transaction," Helmi said on Tuesday. In June 2013, 18 million people used BRI ATM transaction cards or increased 31.7 percent than last year.
