Three NGOs urge revision on EU biofuel policy

REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Three Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Indonesia which also members of Indonesia Civil Society, urged European Parliament to change its policy of oil consumption for biofuel. They are Indonesian Forum for Environment (Walhi), Sawit Watch and European NGO Coalition.

Head of Department of Advocacy and Campaign in Walhi, Nurhidayati said all of them held series of meetings with member of European Parliament to address and provided a view of civil society organizations in Indonesia against biofuel policy in Europe and its impacts to Indonesia. EU Parliament convenes to decide material changes to biofuels policy in Europe on September 11, 2013.

National Executive Director of Walhi, Abetnego Tarin said increased use of biofuels had created threats of environmental damage and social conflict on plantations in southern countries, especially Indonesia which planted commodities of biofuels for EU market.

EU Parliament decision will determine small or large number of land grabbing and other violations of human rights, conversion and social problems in manufacturer countries. Indonesian NGOs will conduct series of activities, fundraising, also gains wider supports.

Indonesia and Malaysia continue to increase crude palm oil (CPO) production to meet needs of biodiesel to achieve EU targets. At same time, biofuels are also part of government's plan to develop palm oil industry. It is estimated increase in palm oil plantation area, from 11 million hectares to 28 million hectares in 2020.
