REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, JAKARTA - Thirty countries attended Climate Change Mitigation Conference held by Lapan and United Nations Officer for Outer Space Affairs (UNUOOSA) on September 2-4, 2013. Lapan and UNOOSA worked together to focus on exploring and discussing the use of space technology for climate change mitigation.
"All experts from various countries come for discussion and sharing their ideas on how space technology can anticipate climate change," Head of Lapan, Bambang Tejasukmana said recently.
There are two things that must be conducted to anticipate the climate change, mitigation and adaptation. Tejasukmana explained that mitigation aimed to calculate carbon and area of remote forest, while adaptation aimed to calculate changes of sea level. For example, they can identify the island flooded by the rising of sea levels.
With more than 17 thousand islands and coastlines of 81 thousand kilometers. If the Arctic ice melts due to climate change, Indonesia is potentially affected.
Representatives of Unoosa, Juan Carlos Villagran said this meeting also negotiated and identified all problems related to climate change. With this cooperation, all countries can prepeare better to anticipate climate change.
